Silt Fencing
Silt fencing is a temporary erosion and sediment control measure designed to stop soil from washing off exposed ground and into nearby drains or waterways. It uses a geotextile fabric supported by posts to create a barrier that slows down water and traps sediment while allowing cleaner water to pass through.

How It Works
When rainwater runs across disturbed or bare soil, it often carries fine particles with it. A silt fence intercepts this flow, reducing speed and filtering the runoff so that sediment settles out before reaching streams, rivers, or stormwater systems.

Applications

Silt fencing is commonly used:
-
Around construction and earthworks sites
-
Downslope of bare soil or stockpiles
-
Along drainage lines or near waterways
-
At the perimeter of roading or subdivision works

Benefits
-
Provides immediate erosion and sediment control on disturbed ground
-
Simple, quick, and cost-effective to install
-
Reduces the risk of sediment entering sensitive environments
-
Supports compliance with erosion and sediment control (ESC) requirements

Things to Note
Silt fencing is a temporary solution and works best for sheet flows of water rather than concentrated flows. It requires routine checks to ensure the fence is upright and sediment build-up is cleared so it can continue working effectively.
